CHICAGO – When Flames fans congregate to the UIC Pavilion to watch the men’s basketball team take on UW-Platteville in exhibition action Wednesday night, they will be in for a pleasant surprise. The playing court at the Pavilion will have a brand new look during the 2012-13 hoops season, after the Athletic Department gave the existing court a significant renovation.

“We’re excited about the improvements that have been made at the Pavilion, not only to the court itself, but also with some of the other high-level equipment that we invested in,” said Athletic Director Jim Schmidt. “The existing court was in need of some updating, and we’re happy with the end result. Our fans will enjoy the new look, and all of the upgrades should help both our men’s and women’s programs in recruiting.”

The new look will feature a red border surrounding the playing court, and two of UIC’s secondary logos will now encompass the area in between the paint and the corner of the three-point line. UIC’s website address ( will be prominently displayed across from the home and visitor benches, and the University of Illinois at Chicago will be spelled out on the red background in between the two benches.

The word “FLAMES” will again be spelled out in all caps below each stanchion, while the “paint” will remain in blue, with the adjacent semicircle matching the color of the maple court. The upgrades will also include brand new Spalding hoops and NBA-style shot clocks. The Spalding arena backstops are the same ones used in NBA games, and for the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Final Four.

The renovated floor was installed at the Pavilion over the weekend, in time for UIC’s lone exhibition game, Wednesday night against UW-Platteville (7 p.m.). The women’s team will open the regular season at home on Friday against Truman State, while the men will host UC Riverside in the regular season opener on Sunday (Nov. 11).
