DALLAS, Texas – Former UIC basketball player Gary Talton was selected in fourth round of the 2013 NBA D-League Draft on Friday night by the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.  Talton was the 67th overall pick by the 2013 NBA D-League Champions along with eight other players, including four rookies.  Rio Grande Valley is an affiliate of the Houston Rockets.

“I feel extremely blessed,” said Talton moments after he was drafted.  “I really appreciate what Coach Moore and his staff has done for me over the past few years.  This is a dream come true.”

Since the draft was neither on TV nor streamed on the internet, Talton and his family watched the selection board on the NBA D-League’s website from their laptop at a local Buffalo Wild Wings.  When Talton’s name came across as 16th pick in the fourth round the family began to celebrate.

“We were just sitting there watching the monitor and then finally we saw my name pop up,” said Talton.

Talton starred for the Flames during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons.  Last year, the Dallas native paced UIC in scoring (12.3) and assists (4.4) and was named to the All-Horizon League Second Team.  Talton helped guide the Flames to an 18-16 record and their first ever postseason victory versus Chicago State in the opening round of the Tournament.

“I’ve been working out twice a day since leaving UIC,” said Talton.  “I can’t wait to join my team and get to work.”

The eight players drafted tonight will join training camp invitees for the start of training camp on Thursday, Nov. 7.

Rio Grande Valley will open the 2013-14 regular-season on the road at Los Angeles on Nov. 23, followed by a road game at Bakersfield on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The Vipers home opener and championship ring ceremony is slated for Friday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. versus the Tulsa 66ers.
