CHICAGO – Fourth-year Head Coach Howard Moore and the UIC men’s basketball program will entertain the University of Chicago on Saturday at the UIC Pavilion with tip-off scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CT.  The contest immediately follows an exhibition game between the UIC women’s basketball team and Elmhurst College set to begin at 1 p.m.

“We plan on playing an exciting brand of basketball this season,” said Moore.  “Our main focus will continue to be hard-noised defense and we look to our seniors to lead that effort.  Our underclassmen are beginning to understand the team principles and I think we will be a fun team to watch this season.”

The Flames welcome back two starters (Hayden Humes and Marc Brown) from last year’s 18-16 squad, which stands as the best record since the 2007-08 season.  UIC mounted the 12th-best turnaround in the nation last year, winning 10 more games (8-22 in 2011-12) from the previous season.  In 2012-13, Moore guided UIC to its first postseason win in program history with an 80-69 triumph over Chicago State in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.

Aside from having the best D-I record in the city of Chicago, the Flames totaled a 12-4 home record which ties for the third-best mark since the opening of the UIC Pavilion in 1982.

Along with Humes and Brown, Moore welcomes senior Purdue transfer Kelsey Barlow to the court after sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules.  Barlow has already garnered recognition from around the Horizon League as he was voted to the preseason All-Conference Second Team.  Senior transfer Jordan Harks will also make his UIC debut after playing two years at Central Arkansas and one season at NAIA Olivet Nazarene.  The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 8.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game as junior with the Bears.

The Flames 2013-14 schedule begins with a season-opener at home versus Drake on Nov. 9.  Prior to that game, UIC will be honoring Chicago native Sonny Parker for his contributions to the youth basketball community.  UIC’s home slate also includes matchups against Big Ten-foe Northwestern (Nov. 20) and Hall-of-Famer Larry Brown’s SMU Mustangs (Dec. 4).  Marquee road contests include Loyola (Dec. 7), Colorado State (Dec. 23) and Illinois at the United Center (Dec. 28).  The Flames will also take part in the bd Global Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla. from Nov. 25-27.  UIC’s first-round opponent will be San Diego with tip-off schedule for 1:30 p.m.
