Josh Mayo Named Horizon League Preseason Player Of The Year

Chicago, Ill.- UIC senior guard Josh Mayo (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville H.S.) was named the 2008-09 Horizon League Men's Basketball Preseason Player of the Year on Thursday, Oct. 9. Mayo was also selected to the 2008-09 Preseason All-Horizon League First Team. Senior center Scott VanderMeer (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central H.S.) was named to the Preseason All-League Second Team. The league's top returning scorer after averaging 17.1 points per game in 2007-08, Mayo becomes the first Preseason Player of the Year at UIC since Cedrick Banks earned the honor prior to the 2004-05 campaign. This is the second straight year that Mayo was named to the league's Preseason First Team. VanderMeer is the league's top returning rebounder (7.5 rpg) and shot-blocker (2.6 bpg). The 7-foot center is a two-time Horizon League All-Defensive Team selection and received the first Preseason All-League Team honor of his career. The Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year and Preseason All-Horizon League Teams were voted on by the league's coaches, selected members of the media and sports information directors.
