Chicago, Ill.- The UIC men's basketball team was picked to finish third in the 2008-09 Horizon League Men's Basketball Preseason Poll of coaches, media and sports information directors that was unveiled by the league office on Tuesday, Oct. 7.

UIC finished third in the voting behind preseason favorite Cleveland State, last year's league runner-up, and second-place Wright State.

The Flames were followed by Green Bay, 2008 league champion Butler, Milwaukee, Valparaiso, Loyola, Detroit and Youngstown State.

The third-place preseason pick is the highest the Flames have been predicted to finish in the league since a second-place selection prior to the 2004-05 campaign.

UIC features the Horizon League's top returning scorer in senior guard Josh Mayo (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville H.S.) and the league's leading rebounder in senior center Scott VanderMeer (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central H.S.). Mayo, a 2007-08 All-Horizon League First Team selection, averaged 17.1 points per game as a junior last season, while VanderMeer averaged a conference-best 7.5 rebounds per contest in 2007-08.

Teams that were picked first were given 10 points, teams that were picked second were given 9 points, and so on.
