Complete UIC Men's Basketball Schedule Unveiled|
CHICAGO - UIC head men's basketball coach Howard Moorereleased the Flames' complete 2012-13 schedule Tuesday, a slate that features 14 regular season home games, four non-conference match-ups against in-state foes and the previously released trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam at University of the Virgin Islands.
The Flames will also play at least 13 games against teams that played in the 2012 postseason, including three NCAA Tournament foes. The Horizon League slate will begin on Jan. 2, when UIC hosts Youngstown State.
"We've got a good mix of talented opponents on this year's schedule," said head coach Howard Moore. "The most important thing is that the non-conference portion of the schedule will help prepare us for the Horizon League, which is always a difficult schedule to prepare for."
UIC will take the court for the first time on Wednesday, Nov. 7, when the Flames entertain UW-Platteville in their lone exhibition game. The regular season opener is set for Sunday, Nov. 11, when UC-Riverside visits the UIC Pavilion.
The Paradise Jam will begin on Friday, Nov. 16, with the Flames taking on New Mexico in the first-round. The Lobos finished the 2011-12 campaign with a 28-7 (10-4 Mountain West) record, and advanced to the second-round of the NCAA Tournament as an at-large selection. Depending on the outcome of that contest, UIC will face either George Mason or Mercer on November 17 or 18. The third and final game of the Paradise Jam will be played on Monday, Nov. 19.
UIC will return home to take on Southeast Missouri on Saturday, Nov. 24, before wrapping up the month of November by traveling to Northern Illinois on Tuesday, Nov. 27. The Flames defeated the Huskies at the Pavilion last season (12/10/11), 62-55.
The month of December will see the Flames take on four opponents that garnered berths to the postseason in 2012, beginning with a Dec. 1 (Saturday) contest at Northwestern. The Wildcats advanced to the second round of the NIT last season. UIC will then begin a three-game homestand by hosting Roosevelt (Wednesday, Dec. 5), Colorado State (Saturday, Dec. 8) and Eastern Michigan. CSU garnered an at-large berth to the Big Dance last March, while EMU captured the Mid-American Conference West Division championship.
On Tuesday, Dec. 18, the Flames will travel to Macomb, Ill., to take on Western Illinois. The Flames edged the Leathernecks at the Pavilion last season (12/19/11), 57-56. WIU made an appearance in the 2012 postseason, accepting an invitation to the College Basketball Invitational. UIC will wrap up the month of December by playing a pair of road games against MAC foes Miami (Ohio) (Dec. 22) and Toledo (Dec. 29). The Rockets, who the Flames have played a total of six times in the past five seasons, advanced to the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament last spring.
As mentioned, the Flames will take on Youngstown State at the Pavilion to begin Horizon League play on Wednesday, Jan. 2, the first of five home games during the month of January. UIC will then take on the League's two participants from the NIT last season, traveling to Cleveland State on Monday, Jan. 7, and hosting Valparaiso two days later (Wednesday, Jan. 9).
The Flames will travel to Green Bay on Saturday, Jan. 12, before returning to the Pavilion to host Loyola in the first installment of the Windy City Rivalry on Wednesday, Jan. 16. UIC will then travel to the Motor City to face defending Horizon League Tournament Champion Detroit (Jan. 19). Two-of the Flames' final three games during the month of January will be at home against Milwaukee (Wednesday, Jan. 23) and Green Bay (Thursday, Jan. 31), and sandwiched around a road tilt at Wright State on Saturday, Jan. 26.
UIC will begin the month of February by hosting Cleveland State on Saturday, Feb. 2. The Flames will then play four-straight road games, at Valpo (Feb. 5), Youngstown State (Feb. 10), Loyola (Feb. 16) and Milwaukee (Feb. 20). On Saturday, Feb. 23, UIC will take a break from Horizon League play by hosting a home BracketBusters game for the first time since the 2008-09 campaign.
