Men's Basketball Heads To Youngstown State For Horizon League Opening Round

CHICAGO- The UIC men's basketball team begins its quest for its first Horizon League title since 2004 this Tuesday, Mar. 3 against Youngstown State in the opening round of the 2009 Speedway Horizon League Men's Basketball Championship. The game between the seventh-seeded Flames (15-14) and the sixth-seeded Penguins (11-18) at the Beeghly Center in Youngstown, Ohio begins at 7 p.m. Eastern/6 p.m. Central. Connie's Pizza presents 2009 UIC Flames men's basketball postseason radio broadcasts on 560 WIND AM. Tuesday's game will air on 560 AM as Adam Levinson calls the action alongside UIC legend and expert analyst Kenny Williams. A live video stream of the game will also be available on the Horizon League Network (free registration required). The Flames have won four in a row and five of their last six heading into Tuesday's clash against the Penguins, who have dropped two consecutive games but swept the two-game regular season series over UIC this year. Seniors Josh Mayo, the league's second-leading scorer at 16.9 ppg, and Scott VanderMeer, the league's top rebounder (8.9 rpg) and shot-blocker (2.6 bpg) will seek to extend their decorated careers for as long as possible with a lengthy postseason run. Mayo is averaging 19.0 ppg against the Penguins this season, while VanderMeer is averaging 9.0 ppg, 10.5 rpg and 3.5 bpg against Youngstown State in 2008-09. Both are bringing their best for last. Mayo is putting up 19.0 ppg in the last two games, while VanderMeer is averaging 12.0 ppg and 13.0 rpg in the last pair of contests.
