CHICAGO - UIC junior point guard Gary Talton, who finished the regular season with 20 double-digit scoring efforts, was named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team, it was announced by the League office from its Indianapolis headquarters Monday afternoon. The All-League teams and award winners were announced in conjunction with the outset of the Horizon League Tournament, where first-round action gets underway Tuesday night.

Talton ended the regular season ranked 12th in the League in scoring (11.7 ppg), and in Horizon League play, was ninth overall (13.2 ppg). He scored at least 15 points on 10 occasions, and dished out three or more assists in 17 individual games. Talton also leads the Horizon League in field goal percentage (.864).

"Gary (Talton) is certainly deserving of being recognized for the impact he had on our League this season," said UIC head coach Howard Moore. "Once he became acclimated to Division I basketball, he proved to be one of the most consistent scorers in the Horizon League, and became one of the focal points of our offense.

"The biggest thing Gary has brought to this program, and what he will continue to bring, is his leadership," Moore added. "With a young team, it's important to have solid leaders, and he's provided that, having served as a captain in his first season at UIC. I've really enjoyed coaching him, and we're hoping he can continue his solid play as we enter the postseason."

Talton scored a season-high 21 points in back-to-back Horizon League home games versus Detroit (12/29/11) and Wright State (12/31/11). Last Thursday against visiting Milwaukee, Talton dished out a season-best eight assists versus just two turnovers. He was UIC's leading scorer in 10 games, including nine times during League play.

Ninth-seeded UIC will open its postseason run at No. 4 Milwaukee Tuesday, beginning at 7 p.m. CST from the Klotsche Center. The Panthers swept the regular season series versus the Flames this season, with a 73-71 overtime win at U.S. Cellular Arena on Dec. 3, and a 72-61 victory at the Pavilion last Thursday (Feb. 23).
