Jeremy Buttell Named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athlete Of The Month Feb. 5, 2010
CHICAGO- UIC men's basketball senior forward Jeremy Buttell (Colleyville, Texas/Heritage H.S.) was named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Month for January, the league office announced on Friday, Feb. 5. Buttell averaged a team-high 15.6 points per game and 7.1 rebounds per game in eight January contests. His month was highlighted by a career-high 31-point performance against Youngstown State on Jan. 7. In the classroom, Buttell has a perfect 4.0 grade point average in his pursuit of a master's degree in education. He already holds a bachelor's degree in communications from UIC. The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Month awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semesters or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the month's competition. Winners are selected by the League's faculty athletics representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
