Josh Crittle Named HL Newcomer of the Week|
Jan. 7, 2013
INDIANAPOLIS - Senior center Josh Crittle, a first-year transfer from UCF, has been named the Horizon League Newcomer of the Week. League officials made the announcement from their Indianapolis-based headquarters Monday morning.
The accolade marks Crittle's second Newcomer of the Week honor of the season, and UIC's fourth weekly plaudit from the League office. Senior guards Gary Talton (11/26/12) and Daniel Barnes (12/17/12) also collected HL Player of the Week nods earlier this season.
Crittle was one-of-four Flames in double figures last Wednesday in their 65-60 win over Youngstown State at the Pavilion. The big man's scoring output came on 6-of-10 shooting as he also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Crittle, who has 39 assists on the season, dished out four assists against just one turnover in the win. Crittle's 39 assists rank second on the team, while his 9.9 ppg is fourth.
"Josh was a force against Youngstown," said head coach Howard Moore. "Everyone in our League is going to have a plan for him, but we won't know what the plan is unless we get him the ball. Our offense is predicated on touching the post, and he's been a huge part of that this season."
The Bellwood, Ill., native has posted double-digit scoring outputs in eight-of the last 11 games. In the past four contests, he has scored 44 points (11.0 ppg) and dished out 14 assists (3.5 apg) against just three combined turnovers. On the season, Crittle is averaging 27.2 minutes per game after playing an average of just 14.1 mpg in his previous three seasons of Division I basketball.
UIC will take on Cleveland State in its Horizon League road opener Monday night beginning at 5:00 p.m. CST (6:00 p.m. EST).
