Men's Hoops Falls At Oregon, 110-87
Eugene, Ore. - The road woes continued for the UIC men's basketball team Tuesday night as it fell to 0-4 on the road this season following a 110-87 loss to the 35th-ranked Oregon Ducks.
The Flames, who fell to 4-4 for the season with the defeat, will return home for three straight outings at the friendly confines of the UIC Pavilion, starting Sunday afternoon against South Florida at 3:00 p.m. Oregon improved to 6-0 following the victory this evening. The offensive fireworks were on display Tuesday night as UIC gave up 110 points to an opponent for the first time since the 1994-95 season when it surrendered 120 points at Texas Christian. The Flames' 87 points were also the most they've tallied in a road contest since a 90-64 victory over American University of Puerto Rico on Dec. 23, 1999. "They're good," Head Coach Jimmy Collins said of the Ducks. "They've got a lot of different weapons and are very difficult to guard. Tonight we weren't quick enough to stop their transition lay-ups. I was pleased with our post play - they played tonight like I've known they could play all along." UIC managed to stay to within four points with the Ducks through the first eight minutes of the game. Oregon, however, used a 20-6 run over the next six minutes to take an 18-point lead, 40-22. In the final minute of the half, though, the Flames converted a pair of steals into four points and Aaron Carr drained a half court three-point prayer at the buzzer to pull UIC to within 10 points, 52-42, heading into the halftime break. Oregon quickly ran its lead back up to 17 points, 60-43, just two and a half minutes in the second stanza, but the Flames once again chipped away at the lead. UIC had a chance to cut the Ducks' lead down to single digits with 12 minutes to play, but Carr's left baseline jumper was blocked by Julius Hicks and the home team then converted the rejection into a Luke Jackson lay-up. The Ducks then put the game away for good with back-to-back three-pointers on their next two possessions by Ben Lindquist and Jackson to up their lead to 77-58. UIC would come no closer than 13 points down the stretch. The Flames, who had no answer for Oregon's 52.2% three-point shooting and 59.3% field goal shooting, were led by Joe Scott who poured in a career-high 29 points. Maurice Brown added his second "double-double" of the year with 17 points and 14 rebounds while Joel Bullock also added 13 points.
Oregon registered five double figure scorers led by a pair of 20-point performances from Frederick Jones and Bryan Bracey.
