Men's Hoops Knock Off Norfolk State Nov. 19, 1999 CHICAGO - The University of Illinois at Chicago used a balanced offensive attack as six different players scored in double digits en route to an 89-69 victory over visiting Norfolk State Friday night. Freshman forward Joe Scott and senior guard Theandre Kimbrough paced UIC with 16 points each while sophomore forward Ian Hanavan tallied UIC’s first "double-double" of the young season with 15 points and 13 rebounds. "We’re playing really good team ball," Head Coach Jimmy Collins said. "As a player, I’m not sure I would’ve passed up some of the shots that these guys were passing up, but this type of team ball breeds success. We’re distributing the ball better this year and the type of offense that we run allows everyone to use their creative instincts." UIC, which led by as many as 21 points in the second half, enjoyed a 39-26 halftime lead after shooting 43.8% from the field and 50% from three-point range. Norfolk State used a 17-8 run midway through the second half to cut UIC’s lead down to 12, but the Flames quickly ran off eight unanswered points to put the game out of reach. The Flames dominated on the boards in the second half and after holding a slight 19-18 lead on the boards at halftime, finished the game-up with 45 rebounds to Norfolk State’s 34. Pre-season Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Damian Woolfolk, led the Spartans with 23 points as he tallied 14 points in the second half.
UIC returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 23, when it hosts 1999 NIT finalists, the Oregon Ducks, at 7:00 p.m.
