Men's Basketball Secures Victory And The Ball Against Northern Illinois
Nov. 29, 2000 Chicago, Ill. - The UIC men's basketball used a 18-0 run over a six-minute span in the second half to secure the 84-64 victory over intrastate rival Northern Illinois at the UIC Pavilion on Wednesday night. Not only did they secure the victory, but they secured the ball against the Huskies (0-5). The Flames (2-2) set a school-record with only three turnovers against NIU while forcing 15 turnovers of their own. "I can't remember a game with only three turnovers," UIC head coach Jimmy Collins said. "We handled the ball extremely well, took our time and we were patient with our offense. This was also the best defensive effort we've had this season. We pride ourselves on taking care of the ball and tonight we didn't give in to their pressure." Five different Flames scored in double-figures with sophomore center Joe Scott leading the way with 15 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Jordan Kardos poured in 14 points of his own with two three-pointers. Those three-pointers began the 18-0 run for the Flames. Maurice Brown added 11 points while Thor Solverson and Aaron Carr each chipped in 10 points apiece. Leon Rodgers topped the Huskies with 18 points while NIU's leading scorer Mike Brown (16. 8 PPG) was limited to seven points. Kardos and senior guard Joel Bullock (7 points) spent most of the night latched onto Brown. "Joel and I switched up on (Brown) tonight," Kardos said. "We were able to take away his outside shooting and by stopping him, we stopped a big part of their game."
With the victory, the Flames improve to 2-0 at the UIC Pavilion. They hope to find their first road victory of the season on Saturday when they travel to East Lansing, Michigan to take on the defending national champion Michigan State Spartans.
