CHICAGO - The UIC men's basketball team concluded exhibition play with a convincing 57-33 victory over Lake Forest Tuesday inside the Pavilion in Chicago.

"I thought we came out with a lot of energy," head coach Howard Moore said. "We were playing a veteran Lake Forest team, who has been around each other for more than three years. They came out with a purpose and stepped up to the challenge and gave us a great first half. During the second half, our guys came out and responded. We are a team that has to outwork opponents by taking charges, getting loose balls and getting to those 50/50 balls, and I thought we did a better job of that in the second half."

All-Horizon League honoree Darrin Williams (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) led the Flames with 14 points and fell just short of a double-double with nine rebounds. Guard Daniel Barnes (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest/Eastern Michigan/Kaskaskia College) also logged double digits with 13 points and added six rebounds.

Trailing 5-4 in the early minutes of the game, freshman Marc Brown (Dallas, Texas/Woodrow Wilson) started a 7-0 run for the Flames as the guard sunk a three-point shot, before the sequence was capped off with an across-the-lane pass by Williams, who connected with sophomore transfer Hayden Humes (Valparaiso, Ind./Valpariso/Toledo) to give the UIC squad the largest lead of the half at six points at 11-5.

The Foresters battled back to tie the Flames at 18-18 with 6:03 to go in the period, but UIC closed out the half on a 6-2 run - highlighted by a jump shot by senior Dorian Tyler (Chicago,Ill./Marshall/Morton) - and took a 25-20 lead into the break. Williams paced the Flames with six points in the opening stanza and added eight rebounds. The Flames opened the second half on a 12-0 run to build a comfortable 17-point advantage (37-20) with 15:56 remaining in the game. The run included two consecutive three-point plays from junior college transfer Gary Talton (Dallas, Texas/Mountain Valley C.C./DeSoto) and Barnes, who finished strong around the hoop to help the Flames create some distance from a scrappy Lake Forest squad.

From there, Tyler and Simonton topped off the game with a jump shot a piece to secure the victory at 57-33. UIC returns to action Friday at 6:00 p.m. (CT) in a game against Eastern Michigan inside the Convocation Center in Ypsilanti, Mich.
