CHICAGO - The UIC men's basketball team tallied a 56-49 exhibition win over UW-Platteville at the UIC Pavilion Wednesday night. Senior guards Daniel Barnes and Gary Talton paced the Flames' offensive attack, combining to score 39 points.

Barnes scored a game-high 21 points, including four three-pointers, while Talton collected 18 points. The duo both shot 7-11 on field goals. UW-Platteville was led by Chas Cross, who scored a team-high 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting.

"I think Platteville did a really good job of making it tough on us," UIC head coach Howard Moore said. "I think our defensive awareness was on at times, and then at certain times, we got flat and didn't finish possessions. We need to get back in the gym, and get that stuff sorted out. All in all, I was glad our guys stepped up and that Danny (Barnes) and Gary (Talton) led us."

Junior Hayden Humes also corralled a game-high 10 rebounds, and collected two of the team's total four blocks, while chipping in with six points.

With UW-Platteville holding a 16-10 edge with just over nine minutes remaining in the first half, Talton hit a three-pointer to ignite an eight-point run, and give the Flames an 18-16 advantage. Barnes scored the other five points in the run, and totaled 13 in the opening frame to lead all players. UIC took a 29-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.

UIC never surrendered the lead in the second half, building its largest lead of 11 points, 52-41, with 6:22 remaining. UW-Platteville trimmed the Flames' lead to six points twice in the final 5:12, but could draw no closer.

UIC shot 42.2 percent from the field for the game, and held the Pioneers to just a 36.5 percent shooting output. The Flames also out-rebounded Platteville 37-31, and committed just nine turnovers.

UIC will lift the lid on the regular season Sunday (Nov. 11) when the Flames host UC Riverside at the Pavilion beginning at 1:00 p.m. CST. The Highlanders will play at DePaul Friday night.
