Men's Basketball Beats Loyola, Advances To Horizon League Semifinals March 7, 2008
Indianapolis, Ind.- The UIC men's basketball team defeated crosstown rival Loyola, 60-49, in a Horizon League Tournament quarterfinal contest at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Friday night. The fourth-seeded Flames (18-14) advance to face top-seeded Butler at Hinkle on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. EST/5:30 p.m. CST. Tickets are available online by logging on to ticketmaster.com or going to the Hinkle Fieldhouse Box Office. Saturday's semifinal game will also be broadcast live on ESPNU and WIND 560 AM. Josh Mayo scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half, while Robert Kreps added 14 off the bench. The game was tight throughout with six ties and nine lead changes. The Ramblers (12-19) would go up by as many as six in the first minute of the second half, but the Flames stayed within striking distance and used an 11-4 run capped by a Mayo lay-in at the 6:25 mark to go up by seven. UIC would then use the free throw line to put the game out of reach, making all 16 of its attempts from the charity stripe during the game's final five minutes. Scott VanderMeer pulled down six rebounds and blocked three shots for the Flames. The Flames' bench outscored Loyola's reserves by a 25-4 margin.
