Men's Basketball Downed By UW-Green Bay In Horizon League Tournament, 76-66
March 3, 2006
Milwaukee, Wis.- The UIC men's basketball could not overcome a hot-shooting UW-Green Bay squad on Friday night, as the Flames fell to the Phoenix in the 2006 Horizon League Tournament quarterfinals, 76-66, at US Cellular Arena in Milwaukee. UIC would not back down in a physical contest, but 50% shooting from behind the arc (11-for-22) and 22 points off of 12 Flames turnovers gave UW-Green Bay the edge. The Flames wrap up the season with a 16-15 record, while UW-Green Bay evens their overall mark at 15-15 en route to a semifinal game with Butler on Saturday. Junior forward Jovan Stefanov led UIC with a season-high tying 19 points to go along with seven rebounds. Senior forward Justin Bowen posted 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting in his final collegiate game, while fellow senior Rocky Collum netted nine points on 3-for-6 three-point shooting. UIC jumped out to an early seven-point lead in the first half, but UW-Green Bay would hit three consecutive three-pointers to change the momentum and claim a 19-15 advantage. A bucket by Othyus Jeffers followed by a trey from Collum would put the Flames back in front at 23-19, but the Phoenix countered with a 15-3 run to regain the lead and go ahead 38-29 at intermission. UIC would cut the lead down to six on five separate occasions in the second half, but that's as close as the Flames would get as UW-Green Bay continued to hit the three in the final period (5-for-10). Danijel Zoric pulled down a game-high eight rebounds while scoring nine points, while Jeffers scored 10 points and picked up five caroms.
