Dec. 6, 2013
CHICAGO – UIC Associate Head Baseball Coach Sean McDermott walks fans through a guided video tour of the latest construction updates with Curtis Granderson Stadium. McDermott also details the stadium’s unique features that include a full outfield berm for patron seating, side-by-side bullpens behind the left field wall and state-of-the art dugouts amenities.
"We're really excited about the progress," said McDermott. "Fans and players are going to have a full stadium experience right here in the heart of downtown Chicago."
The multi-million dollar facility is scheduled to open this upcoming spring and will serve as anchor for the Curtis Granderson Youth Program, an initiative designed to benefit the children of Chicago. MLB’s youth RBI program and the Chicago Public School system will join as chief partners in the effort, along with contributions from local little league organizations and UIC administration. An estimated 18,000 youngsters will have the opportunity to compete in Curtis Granderson Stadium as well as given access to educational and developmental resources.
On Sept. 17, UIC held a groundbreaking ceremony in which hundreds of invited guests attended. Granderson announced his pledge for the project on Feb. 6, 2013 at his UIC jersey retirement event and the University Board of Trustees gave the concept a green light with their official approval on May 30.
