2009 Roberto Clemente Award Ballot CHICAGO- UIC Athletics Hall of Famer Curtis Granderson was named the Detroit Tigers' nominee for the 2009 Roberto Clemente Award, given annually to the Major League Baseball player who combines exceptional performance on the baseball field with devoted work in the community, on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Fans can vote for Granderson by clicking here. The ballot is available later today (Sept. 2) until Oct. 4. Granderson was nominated for the prestigious honor because of his commitment to education through his Grand Kids Foundation and his enthusiasm for teaching the game of baseball to youths through Play Baseball Detroit, among other charitable and philanthropic activities that the UIC graduate engages in year-round. Tonight Granderson will be recognized for his nomination for the Roberto Clemente Award during a pregame ceremony at Comerica Park. Last year's winner was Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals, and the likes of Baseball Hall of Famers such as Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Cal Ripken Jr. have garnered the honor.
