CHICAGO – UIC senior pitcher Joey Begel was named to the Jayhawk League Top-20 Prospect List as announced by Prefect Game on Monday.  Begel competed for the Hay Larks during the summer of 2012 and posted a 4-2 record out of nine starts with an ERA of 2.08.  He also guided the Larks to their first league championship since 2008 and a third-place finish in the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series.

Begel was also voted to the all-Jayhawk League second-team along with UIC teammate Joe Betcher.  For the Larks, Begel tossed 56.1 innings with 34 strikeouts including two complete games and one shutout.

The Darien, Ill., native, stood as the Flames winningest pitcher during the 2012 season with a mark of 7-7, pitching 98.1 innings and fanning 46 batters.

Begel sits 10th on UIC’s career innings pitched list with 210.1 frames, needing just 66 to enter the top three.  He also needs nine wins during his final campaign to slide into the top five all-time as he currently owns 17 victories.
