    Aug. 2, 2010

CHICAGO - Eight UIC student-athletes from four different sports have been named to the 2010 Spring Academic All-League Teams, the Horizon League announced on Monday.

Steve McGuiggan, an All-Horizon League Second Team and All-Tournament Team selection on the diamond was honored for his 3.39 grade point average. The outfielder is majoring in secondary education.

Softball standout Brooke Frydendall, an All-Horizon League First Team honoree and communications major, carried a 3.21 GPA.

A trio of women's tennis players was also selected. Jenna Reisch (3.80; psychology), Ilinca Cristescu (3.77; Spanish and international studies) and Mariya Kovaleva (3.72; finance) were all chosen and make up half of the total women's tennis players chosen.

Cristescu, who hails from Bensenville, Ill., was a First Team All-Horizon League selection.

In May, Kovaleva, who is the reigning back-to-back Horizon League Player of the Year, was honored by the conference as the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Month.

Finally, three runners from UIC's men's track and field squad made the cut. Matt Morse (3.96; history), Erik Perez (3.93; education) and Matt Zaluckyj (3.71; computer engineering) all earned All-League honors.

Perez was named one of three UIC Male Athletes of the Year during the Academic Night of Success banquet in April.

Zaluckyj is the reigning Horizon League Champion in the outdoor 800-meter dash, while Morse placed fifth in 10,000-meter run.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
