UIC Baseball Players Continue to Thrive in Summer Leagues

CHICAGO - The UIC baseball team sent 21 baseball players to summer leagues following the 2014 season. The players were sent to teams all across the nation to further their regular season successes.
The Westmont Red Sox added David Cronin and Carl Sugihara this summer. Sugihara currently boasts a batting average of .303 across 11 games and Cronin has an average of .302 across 13 games. Both Cronin (9) and Sugihara (7) rank in the top five on the team for stolen bases.
Pitcher Brian Evak is having a successful season with the Romeoville Royals. Evak has appeared in four games, three of which he started, and has an ERA of 1.29. Over 14 innings pitched, he has struck out 17 batters and has limited opponents to a .236 batting average.
Tyler Detmer is playing for the Hays Larks and is experiencing great success at the plate. Detmer currently ranks third on the team with a .382 batting average along with five home runs and 26 RBI across 21 games.
Gabe Dwyer has continued his success with the Des Plaines Patriots where he has a .360 batting average across 10 games. Out west in the California Collegiate League, Mickey McDonald is a member of Neptune Beach Pearl. Through 14 games, McDonald has 17 hits and a .340 batting average.
Joe Rossi and Tommy Field joined the Homestead Ranchers and Rossi has a batting average of .370 across 16 games. Field is currently boasting a .420 batting average in 19 games and ranks second on the team with 11 RBI. Jeff Boehm has played in 20 games with 32 hits and is batting .400 for the Southland Vikings, despite missing the beginning of the season recovering from a broken finger.
Pitcher Ryan Hinchley delivered a solid start for the DuPage County Hounds against the Joliet Admirals on June 15. The 6-foot-3 left-hander allowed two runs on three hits across six innings in the no decision. Conor Philbin is still recovering from a foot injury and will join Hinchley on the Hounds later in the season.
Zenon Kolakowski has been instrumental for the Hutchinson Monarchs this summer, hitting a run-scoring double that pushed the Monarchs to a 11-7 extra inning victory over the Newton Rebels on June 11. Ricardo Ramirez has spent time at second base for the Monarchs.
Jack Andersen and Ian Lewandowski joined up with the Lombard Orioles this summer who are in first in the North division of the Chicago Suburban Baseball League with a 12-1 record. Out in the Coastal Plains League, Alex Posey has an ERA of 3.72 across 9 2/3 innings for the Edenton Steamers.
Mitchell Schulewitz is spending the summer with the Kenosha Kingfish while Andrew Reisinger is honing his skills with the Crystal Lake Cardinals. In the Wisconsin State League, Brett Krause continues to compete for the Sheboygan A’s.
In his first season with the New York Mets, Curtis Granderson (2000-02) has a batting average of .234 along with 13 home runs and 41 RBI in 86 games played. In 33 contests since June 1, Granderson is hitting .295 with seven home runs and 18 RBI. Over the span, Granderson has drawn an impressive 23 walks and hit seven doubles.
Derrick Miramontes (2008-09) is currently playing for the Southern Illinois Miners, a Frontier League team in Marion, Ill. Miramontes was recently voted into the Frontier League All-Star team as a closer. This is his second Frontier League All-Star selection, the first coming in 2011 when he was a member of the River City Rascals. Miramontes owns 10 saves in 12 attempts and an ERA of 1.68. He has walked seven and struck out 27 this season, a ratio of nearly 4:1.
Tomas Michelson (2012-14) was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 29th round of the MLB Draft and currently plays for the Princeton Rays in the Appalachian League. Michelson has an ERA of 2.25 and has struck out eight in four appearances for the Rays.
