INDIANAPOLIS - Eight UIC student-athletes were named to the Horizon League's Spring Academic All-League Teams, as announced by League officials from their Indianapolis headquarters Wednesday. Highlighting the Flames' representation was the women's tennis team, which included four-of the League's six selections.

"It's great to see our student-athletes be recognized for their recent success in the classroom," said UIC Athletic Director Jim Schmidt. "Our student-athletes have achieved three-straight semesters with a collective 3.0 GPA, and the athletes that were named to this spring's All-Academic Teams are some of our department's standouts, both on and off the field."

Representing the UIC women's tennis team on the Academic All-League Team were seniors Mariya Kovaleva and Linda Hricistova, along with underclassmen Jana Knoppe and Haley Craig. Kovaleva, who graduated with a 3.51 grade-point-average in UIC's Finance program, capped off her tremendous career by collecting her unprecedented fourth-consecutive Horizon League Player of the Year accolade.

Meanwhile, Hricistova accounted for nearly 30 percent of UIC's doubles wins last season, while Knoppe and Craig combined for 46 singles wins, including a combined 19-1 singles record versus Horizon League opponents. Craig was also named to the Horizon League's Second-Team.

Joey Begel represented UIC's baseball team on the spring's Academic All-League squad. Begel, a right-handed starting pitcher from Darien, Ill., ranked third in the Horizon League in wins last season, collecting seven victories as the Flames' weekend ace. Begel, who carries a 3.37 cumulative GPA in UIC's College of Business, pitched 98.2 innings on the season, helping the Flames make an impressive run to the championship game of the Horizon League Tournament at Les Miller Field.

Softball's Coryn Schmit, who also collected Capitol One Academic All-Region and Academic All-American honors at the conclusion of the 2012 campaign, represented the Flames on the Horizon League's Spring All-Academic Team. Schmit, who carries a cumulative 3.98 GPA as an honors student in UIC's Kinesiology program, has been named the athletic department's Female Student-Athlete of the Year in each of the past two years. She was named Second-Team All-Horizon League in 2012.

Mariya Denisenko from UIC's women's track & field team also garnered All-Academic honors. Denisenko tallied three top-five finishes in the long jump during the outdoor season, including a fourth-place finish at the Horizon League Outdoor Championship. She carries a flawless 4.0 GPA in UIC's Kinesiology curriculum.

Anthony Crawford, a men's trackster from Forest Park, Ill., was also recognized as an All-Academic honoree. He recorded a total of four top-10 finishes in the 100-and 200-meter dash during the outdoor campaign. Crawford boasts a 3.2 GPA in UIC's Exercise & Fitness program.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
