Baseball Opens NCAA Regional Against Texas A&M

Chicago, Ill.- The UIC baseball team takes off for College Station, Texas on Thursday morning to participate in the program's fourth all-time NCAA Regional this weekend. The back-to-back Horizon League champion Flames (34-20) square off with the Big 12 regular season champion Aggies of Texas A&M (43-16) to begin their regional stay this Friday night, May 30 at 6:30 p.m. Central. The winner meets the winner of the Dallas Baptist (37-17) and Houston (39-22) contest on Saturday, May 31 at 6:30 p.m. The loser must stave off the end of its campaign by playing an elimination game that same day at 12:30 p.m. NCAA Regionals feature a double-elimination format, with the winner advancing to the best-of-three Super Regional series to meet the victor of the Houston Regional hosted by Rice and featuring Texas, St. John's and Sam Houston State. UIC will make its fourth NCAA Regional appearance, all taking place in the last six years (2003, 2005, 2007, 2008). Leading the Flames' offense has been the red-hot Brett Schaefer. The junior first baseman out of Orland Park, Ill., went a perfect 5-for-5 with four runs batted against Milwaukee in the Horizon League championship game on Sunday. Schaefer finished the championship with a .733 (11-for-15) batting average and seven RBI in four contests en route to tournament MVP honors. Right-hander Mike Kool, the probable starter against the Aggies, enters the regional with on a three-game winning streak. The junior out of Davenport, Iowa has allowed only three earned runs in his last 24.1 innings of work.
