CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team will travel to Valparaiso this weekend for its final road series of the 2012 season with the first contest set for Friday at 3 p.m. CT.  The Flames hold a 20-8 advantage over the Crusaders since 2000 despite dropping two-of-three games at home earlier this year.  From 2003-09, the Flames racked up a 14-game winning streak over Valpo, a stretch that pitted the two squads against each other in six of those seven years.

The Flames are coming off a hard-fought, 11-4, loss at No. 14 Purdue on Wednesday evening, the eighth time this season that UIC has played a top-25 program.  In that contest, sophomore Jon Ryan was a triple shy of the cycle, hitting a single, a double and his fourth homer of the season on a two-run blast over the right field wall.  In his last seven games, Ryan leads the team with a .462 batting average and a .885 slugging percentage.

The Flames’ weekend rotation will feature junior Joey Begel on Friday, freshman Brian Evak on Saturday (1 p.m.) and freshman lefty Tim Tarter on Sunday (1 p.m.).  Begel continues to creep up on several of UIC’s career top-10 list, most notably the all-time innings pitched leaderboard as he needs just 19.1 frames to enter that group.

The Crusaders enter the three-game set having triumphed in three straight games, winning 19 of their last 22 affairs.  Valpo has also won 11 of its last 12 Horizon League meetings and saw its nine-game overall winning streak snapped last Sunday at Wright State.

The Valparaiso athletic department will provide a free audio broadcast of the games on Saturday and Sunday which can be heard by clicking here.
