May 10, 2011
CHICAGO - UIC baseball player Jason Ganek has been named one of 25 players from around the country to the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Watch List, an honor which is bestowed upon the player who makes an impact both on the mound and at the plate.
Ganek, a senior, ranks among the Horizon League’s leaders in several statistical categories. He is tied for fourth in the conference with six home runs, ranks eighth in slugging percentage with a clip of .494 and ninth in RBI with 29. The senior slugger leads the team with 76 total bases, is tied for the team lead with 12 doubles and ranks second on the squad with 46 hits in 2011.
In his first full season on the mound, Ganek ranks fourth in the Horizon League with four saves. The right-hander has a 3.86 ERA and has recorded 10 strikeouts in 11.2 innings of work this year.
The "Ole" Award was established in 2010 by the College Baseball Foundation and is given to the nation's top two-way collegiate baseball player. While at Washington State, John Olerud was named a freshman All-American, an All-American first baseman and pitcher and the Baseball America College Player of the Year.
Ganek, a quarter-finalist, is the only player from the Horizon League named to the Olerud Watch List. The award will be presented in Lubbock, Texas on July 3, 2011 in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Night of Champions.
