Chicago Cubs All-Star Marlon Byrd To Throw Out First Pitch At Les Miller Field
April 28, 2011
CHICAGO - Another special guest, Chicago Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd, has been added to the weekend lineup when the UIC baseball team hosts the No. 9 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Les Miller Field on Saturday, May 7 at 7:05 p.m.
Byrd has been scheduled to appear at The Mill for the series opener between the Flames and Yellow Jackets on Saturday, May 7 at 7:05 p.m. He will be on hand to throw out a ceremonial first pitch along with two heroes from the Wounded Warrior Project, United States Marine Corp sergeant Matt Johnson and United States Army sergeant Dan Casara.
Byrd, a 2010 National League All-Star, has a special connection to the game. The Boynton Beach, Fla. native played collegiately for the Yellow Jackets under Danny Hall for two years before a devastating leg injury eventually prompted the outfielder to transfer to Georgia Perimeter College where he finished his amateur career before being drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 10th round of the 1999 MLB draft.
In his first season with the Cubs in 2010, Byrd was selected to make his first All-Star Game appearance during his Major League career which began with the Phillies in 2002. Byrd led the Cubs in both hits (170) and games played (152) last season, both of which also marked career highs.
The three-game series between UIC and Georgia Tech is proudly sponsored by University Village Marketplace. Located near Halsted and Maxwell Streets, University Village Marketplace brings together city dining, national and local retailers, plus neighborhood services, all with the friendly spirit of the village.
The non-conference series will continue on Sunday, May 8 at 2:05 p.m. and conclude on Monday, May 9 with an afternoon matinee at 1:05 p.m. For a full list of promotions and events taking place at The Mill May 7-9, please visit UICFlames.com
