April 26, 2011
CHICAGO - Following a three-game sweep at Butler over the weekend, the UIC baseball team will return home to Les Miller Field for a single game Tuesday night against the Chicago State Cougars at 7:05 p.m.
The Flames (19-16) have won three games in a row and six of their last seven. It is the second time this season that UIC is doing battle with Chicago State (5-26) on the diamond. The Flames won the first ballgame, 4-1, on March 30; the win extended UIC's winning streak to a season-long eight games at the time.
During the recent stretch, Matt Serna and Nick Addison have been leading the offensive charge. Serna is batting .423 (11-for-26) over the last seven games with a double and six RBI. Over the same span, Addison is hitting .400 (12-for-30) with a team-high 10 RBI. The outfielder's 12 hits and 15 total bases also lead the Flames over the past seven games. In the three-game sweep over Butler, Addison's high school teammate, Ryan Shober, batted .545 (6-for-11) with three extra-base hits, four stolen bases and five runs scored.
On the mound, Matt Salemi has been sharp in his last five outings. The right-hander is 4-1 with two complete games in his last five starts for the Flames with a 1.72 ERA (7 ER/36.2 IP). Eric Wyman was stellar out of the bullpen in game two on Saturday against the Bulldogs. The southpaw struck out a season-high seven batters in 4.1 innings of relief to notch his first win of the season. Closer Jason Ganek has made six scoreless appearances out of his last seven, earning three saves in the process. The right-hander, who doubles as UIC's third baseman, is tied for the Horizon League lead with six home runs and ranks tied for second with four saves.
Chicago State has been led by Michael Carpen, who is batting a team-high .390 on the season. Jonathan Carpen is batting .336 and leads the Cougars with 24 RBI, 10 more than his closest teammate.
This weekend the Flames will hit the road for a pair of Horizon League doubleheaders in Ohio. On Friday, Mike Dee's squad will play a twin-bill against the Wright State Raiders at Nischwitz Stadium beginning at 2 p.m. CT. UIC swept the first doubleheader of the season between the two teams at The Mill on April 17 by scores of 15-4 and 8-7. Sunday, the Flames will play a pair against the Youngstown State Penguins beginning at 11 a.m. CT; those will be the first two meetings of the season between the two schools. The Penguins will close out the regular season in Chicago on May 19-20.
