CHICAGO —The UIC baseball team (14-15) will play Horizon League-rival Wright State this weekend for a three-game tilt, beginning Thursday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. CT. The series will continue on Friday at 6:05 p.m., and conclude Saturday at 12:05 p.m.  The weekend matchup will be part of the Grand Opening Celebration of Curtis Granderson Stadium.

New York Mets outfielder and UIC Hall-of-Famer Granderson will throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Thursday’s game to commemorate the new stadium.

The Flames sit second in conference (9-6) behind first-place Wright State (12-2). UIC has come out on top of eight of their last 12 league games, taking the series against Oakland, Youngstown State, Milwaukee, and Valparaiso.

Junior Tyler Detmer had five RBIs in UIC’s 11-1 victory over Oakland on Friday. Detmer finished the weekend with four runs, five hits, and six RBIs, while junior pitcher Tomas Michelson improved to 4-2 on the season with a 3.64 ERA. Saturday’s double-header was split between the Flames and Grizzlies. Game one resulted in a UIC 16-6 victory, with freshman Mitchell Schulewitz picking up the win for the Flames. The Golden Grizzles avoided the series sweep by beating UIC 15-3 in eight innings.

Wright State enters the weekend stint with an overall record of 18-16, leading the Horizon League by four games. Coming off a series sweep against Milwaukee, the Raiders scored 22 runs while giving up 15. Game 3 of the series resulted in a 6-5 win in 12 innings with a game-winning single from Jack Murphy. Two full-time starters are batting over .300 for the Raiders in Michael Timm (.333) and Sean Murphy (.311). Timm also leads Wright State in hits (42) and runs (23).
