Michelson Tabbed as Horizon League Pitcher of the Week
April 15, 2013
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – UIC sophomore pitcher Tomas Michelson has been named the Horizon League’s Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 8-14 as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. Michelson tossed his first collegiate complete game in a 6-1 win against Wright State this past Friday, while posting a career-high eight strikeouts.
“Tomas is a competitor and he had another great outing,” said head coach Mike Dee. “It’s always important to have a good start on Friday and for Tomas to throw nine innings is huge for our bullpen.”
Michelson improved his season record to 4-2, scattering seven hits over nine innings and did not give up any walks or earned runs. All seven WSU hits went for singles as the Raiders were held scoreless for the final eight innings after plating a runner that reached base on a game-opening error.
The Naperville, Ill., native holds an ERA of 1.82, which ranks second in the Horizon League and an opposing batting average of .238 that sits fourth.
This is the second weekly conference honor for Michelson after garnering the laurel on Feb. 18, a week in which he was also named the National Primetime Pitcher of the Week by CollegeBaseball360.com for his performance at then-No. 18 Texas A&M.
The Flames will be back in action on Tuesday as they host Chicago State with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. CT.
