CHICAGO—UIC softball player Natalie Hernandez and baseball player Alex Lee have both been selected as the Illinois National Guard UIC Flames Student-Athletes of the Week for the period Mar. 31-Apr. 6. Both Hernandez and Lee helped their teams capture sweeps against Horizon League opponents over the weekend.

Hernandez finished the weekend sweep with a .692 (9-of-13) batting average as her team played host to Wright State. She led the Flames with 8 runs, 9 hits, 9 RBI’s and 16 total bases. The senior also recorded two home runs and a .750 on-base percentage.

This marks Hernandez’s first time being honored as the Illinois National Guard Student-Athlete of the Week on the year, but the second softball player on the season.

Lee concluded the week with a .769 (10-of-13) batting average with a slugging percentage of 1.077. He also recorded his first career home run, a three-run shot in an 18-5 win over Purdue. He also had three RBI’s in the Purdue game which is a new career-high. During the weekend sweep over Youngstown State, the Prospect Heights, Ill., native collected a career-high three runs scored in the win on Friday and had a career-high four hits in the victory on Saturday. The junior has also been named Horizon League Batter of the Week.

This marks Lee’s first time being honored as the Illinois National Guard Student-Athlete of the Week and the first baseball player on the season.

The softball team will be back in action on Tuesday when they host North Dakota in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. CT at Flames Field. The baseball team will next play host to Chicago State on Wednesday at Curtis Granderson Stadium with scheduled start time at 6:05 p.m.
