CHICAGO – UIC baseball player Tyler Detmer has been named the Horizon League’s Batter of the Week for the period of March 17-23, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.  Detmer went 7-for-21 (.333) in five games this week, collected nine RBI, six runs and belted two home runs.  The junior also recorded two doubles which helped produce a slugging percentage of .714.

Detmer began the week with his first career grand slam against Northern Illinois this past Tuesday.  He followed that up with another home run versus city-rival Chicago State on Wednesday, hitting 3-for-4 with three RBI.

The Breese, Ill., native helped UIC claim a series victory against conference-foe Valparaiso over the weekend, winning both games of a doubleheader on Saturday.  In those two meetings, Detmer went 4-for-9 from the plate with two RBI and two runs scored.

Detmer has proven to be one of the league’s best hitters so far this season as he currently ranks first in RBI (17), home runs (3) and slugging percentage (.507).  He also ranks fifth in hits (23) and sixth in runs scored (13).

UIC’s next scheduled game at Notre Dame on Tuesday has been postponed due to cold temperatures forecasted for the area.  There remains a possibility that the non-league tilt will be made up on Wednesday afternoon.
