Baseball Set For Home Opener
March 18, 2010
CHICAGO - The UIC baseball team returns to Chicago this weekend to entertain the Missouri Valley Conference's Creighton Bluejays in a two-game set at Les Miller Field beginning on Friday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. The series continues with a second game on Saturday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The matchup was originally scheduled to be a three-game set, however, Sunday's contest has already been cancelled. This marks the second straight season that the Flames and Jays have squared off on the diamond. Last year, in Omaha, Neb., Creighton won the first game, 9-4. The second game was slated to be played in Rosenblatt Stadium, home of the College World Series, but it was washed out by rain. The Jays came back on Sunday to capture the finale, 4-3. The Flames are led offensively by senior Chris Rutta, who was honored as the Horizon League Player of the Week for his performance against Baylor last weekend. The senior is batting .340 (17-50) with team-highs in home runs (4), RBI (14), total bases (36) and slugging percentage (.720). Junior Rafael Garcia, a converted infielder, has been given the nod to take the hill for UIC in Friday's opener. The right-hander is 0-2 with a 12.84 ERA (29 ER/20.1 IP). He took a no-decision in his last start at Baylor after exiting the game with a 7-6 lead after 7.0 IP, the longest outing of his young pitching career. Garcia will be opposed by Creighton's Jonas Dufek who comes in at 3-0 with 5.06 ERA (12 ER/21.1 IP). On Saturday, lefty Michael Heesch is slated to start for the Flames. The sophomore is 1-2 with a team-low 4.22 ERA (10 ER/21.1 IP). He will face fellow sophomore Brandon Koenigstein who is 1-0 with a 3.74 ERA (9 ER/21.2 IP) for the Jays.
