    CHICAGO - UIC's Chris Rutta has been named Horizon League Player of the Week for the period of March 7-14. This is the senior's second weekly honor from the Horizon League office.

    In UIC's three-game series at Baylor over the weekend, Rutta batted .538 (7-for-13). The Rothschild, Wis. native had a team-best seven hits and four RBI in the series. Three of the outfielder's seven hits went for extra bases.

    The senior becomes the second UIC player to be named the Horizon League Player of the Week, joining teammate Matt Serna. Serna won the season's first award for the period of Feb. 14-21.

    Rutta is batting .340 (17-for-54) in the early going this season and he leads the Flames in several offensive categories including: home runs (four), RBI (14) and slugging percentage (.720).

    Last season Rutta to the lineup following surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in 2008. In 16 outfield starts a year ago, he hit .340 (18-for-53) with four home runs and 19 RBI, tallying a .628 slugging percentage for UIC.

    Milwaukee's Jordan Herbert was chosen as the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week. UIC sophomore LHP Michael Heesch was also nominated for that honor.

    By virtue of his selection, Rutta will become eligible for the Horizon League Network's weekly "People's Choice" award, which is announced each Thursday afternoon.     Rutta and the Flames will return home to Les Miller Field on Friday afternoon when they host the Creighton Bluejays at 4:05 p.m. It's the first contest at home this season after beginning the year with 13 ballgames away from Chicago.
