CHICAGO – Opening weekend for Curtis Granderson Stadium has been set for April 17-19 as the Flames will play host to Horizon League-foe Wright State in a three-game series.  Granderson, a UIC Hall-of-Famer and three-time MLB All-Star, will be on-hand to cut the ribbon and throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the new multi-million dollar stadium.  The weekend celebration continues after play on Thursday night (April 17) with the second annual Diamond Dinner.

The Diamond Dinner will be held in the Flames Athletic Center (839 W. Roosevelt), which sits directly north of Granderson Stadium.  UIC Head Coach Mike Dee along with a celebrity keynote speaker will address the expected crowd of 300 attendees.  Tickets for the Diamond Dinner are currently on sale as well as UIC baseball season tickets.  See the PDF brochure above for more details.

For an upgraded purchase, fans will have the opportunity for a meet-and-greet with Granderson during Thursday’s game in the luxury suite.

Friday’s game, which starts at 6:05 p.m., will be “Student Day” at the ball park.  All UIC and Chicago high school students are invited to spend the evening with UIC baseball and take in the game from the grassy berms in the outfield.

Saturday (April 19) is slated as “Kid’s Day”, with first pitch set for 12:05 p.m.  All children 13 and under will be admitted free of charge.  A plethora of pre-game activities will be on-site for the youth to enjoy.

Construction of Curtis Granderson Stadium began on Sept. 17, after a ground-breaking ceremony that welcomed hundreds of invited guests.  Granderson announced his pledge to fund the state-of-the-art venue during the first annual Diamond Dinner last February.  The UIC Board of Trustees approved plan for the stadium on May 30.  Granderson’s gift to UIC is the single largest known contribution from a professional athlete to their alma mater in history.
