CHICAGO - Baseball player Alex Grunenwald has been selected as the UICFlames.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the period of March 4 - 10 as announced by the athletic department on Wednesday morning. Grunenwald went 7-of-10 from the plate with seven RBI in two games over the weekend against reigning Big Ten Champion Purdue. He was also named the Horizon League Batter of the Week by the conference office and CollegeSportsMadness.com.
In Friday's 9-2 home-opening win, Grunenwald tallied a game-high four hits and drove in three runs. In Saturday's 17-10 slugfest defeat, the senior hit 3-for-5 including his fourth home run of the season. Grunenwald also recorded four of the Flames' 10 RBI and tacked on two runs in game two. The Merrill, Wis., native takes home baseball's first UICFlames.com award of the season.
Grunenwald currently leads the team hits (15), RBI (14), homers (4) and slugging percentage (.630). Those numbers haven't come easy as the Flames own the 14th toughest schedule in the country so far this season, according to BoydsWorld.com - a college baseball ratings website.
The Flames are in the midst of a seven-game homestand as they continue action on Wednesday at 4:05 p.m. CT against Roosevelt. UIC will open Horizon League play on Friday versus Youngstown State for a three-game series at Les Miller Field.
