Grunenwald Named Horizon League Batter of the Week|
March 12, 2013
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Redshirt senior Alex Grunenwald has been named the Horizon League’s Batter of the Week for the period of March 4-10, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. Grunenwald lit up the reigning Big Ten Champion Boilermakers by going 7-for-10 at the plate and posting seven RBI in just two games. The Merrill, Wis., native was also selected as the HL Batter of the Week by CollegeSportsMadness.com.
The award marks the second weekly honor for Grunenwald this season as he garnered the laurels on Feb. 28. The Flames have won a weekly conference accolade in each of the first four weeks so far this season and stand alone as the only Horizon League team to earn more than two.
On Friday’s 9-2 home-opening win, Grunenwald tallied a game-high four hits and drove in three runs. In Saturday’s 17-10 slugfest defeat, the senior hit 3-for-5 from the plate including his fourth home run of the season. Grunenwald also recorded four of the Flames’ 10 RBI and tacked on two runs.
He currently leads the team hits (15), RBI (14), homers (4) and slugging percentage (.630). Those numbers haven’t come easy as the Flames own the 14th toughest schedule in the country so far this season, according to BoydsWorld.com – a college baseball ratings website.
UIC will host its next five games at Les Miller Field, starting with Chicago on Tuesday and Roosevelt on Wednesday. The Flames will begin Horizon League action on Friday as they entertain Youngstown State for a three-game series.
