Joey Begel Named Horizon League Pitcher of the Week|
March 4, 2013
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Senior Joey Begel has been selected as the Horizon League’s Pitcher of the Week for the period of Feb. 25 – March 3, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. Begel tossed one of the best games of his career on Sunday against #2 Vanderbilt, allowing a mere three hits and one run over 7.1 innings of work. The Darien, Ill., native also totaled a career-high six strikeouts against the Commodores.
The right-hander earns his second career weekly accolade as UIC picks up its third straight Horizon League award, the only conference school to do so. Alex Grunenwald took home Batter of the Week honors last week (Feb. 28) and Tomas Michelson garnered the season’s first Pitcher of the Week laurel (Feb 18).
Begel kept the high-powered Vandy offense in check by not allowing a VU runner past second base during his time on the mound. After giving up an inconsequential double in the first inning, Begel didn’t allow another hit until the fifth frame. When he exited the game, UIC held a 1-0 lead, but was later charged with the Dore’s eighth-inning run. The Flames ended up losing the contest in the 10th inning, 3-1, on a walk-off homer.
A four-year player for the Flames, Begel ranks seventh in all-time appearances with 52 and eighth in career innings pitched with 226.1.
UIC kicks off its home schedule this weekend with a three-game series against reigning Big Ten champion Purdue, beginning on Friday at 4 p.m. CT.
