Feb. 28, 2013
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Redshirt senior Alex Grunenwald has been named the Horizon League’s Batter of the Week for the period of Feb. 18-24, as announced by the conference office on Thursday morning. Grunenwald posted three home runs and drove in seven RBI as the Flames notched a series win against Santa Clara this past weekend. He also tallied a batting average of .357 and a slugging percentage of 1.071.
In Friday’s game, Grunenwald tallied back-to-back bombs in the second and fourth frames to catapult the Flames to a series-opening win by a final of 5-3.
UIC struggled at the plate in game one of Saturday’s twin bill as Grunenwald managed to go 1-for-4 at the plate, smacking a double in the second inning.
In the series finale, the Merrill, Wis., native blasted a three-RBI homer in the first inning, which kick-started a UIC offensive explosion that saw 17 hits as they eventually earned the 15-8 triumph. Grunenwald finished the contest with four RBI, while going 2-for-6 in the box.
The award marks the first weekly league honor for Grunenwald and the first for UIC this season. Sophomore hurler Tomas Michelson garnered the Pitcher of the Week accolade last week (Feb. 18).
UIC returns to action at #2 Vanderbilt for a three-game series, starting on Friday at 4 p.m .CT.
