CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team continues its early season road swing at Santa Clara this weekend with action beginning on Friday at 8 p.m.  CT.  Saturday will feature a doubleheader with play commencing at 3 p.m., while all three contests will be streamed live for free at

The Flames enter this weekend after an encouraging season-opening series against then-24th ranked Texas A&M.  UIC upset the Aggies on opening night by a score of 2-0 in front of an A&M crowd that reached over 6,000.  The Aggies claimed victory in the final two outings (4-3 and 5-1) to win the series, but the Flames experienced superb pitching and sound defense throughout the weekend.

“It was a real positive weekend for us,” said head coach Mike Dee.  “We saw some things that really pleased us.  We pitched real well and played outstanding defense and did both of those things against a very good club.  The real thing I was impressed with was the way our guys handled the environment.  There was intensity, focus and they didn’t show any nerves.”

Santa Clara enters the three-game series owning a 2-2 record with a pair of wins over Seattle in the opening weekend.  The Broncos house a heavy-powered offense as they average 10 runs per outing and a team-batting average of .360.

“One of the things we tell our guys is to compete against the game,” said Dee.  “We don’t look at a lot of statistics of the opposing team.  We feel like if we go out and do the same things that we did last weekend and improve offensively that we’re going to be fine.”

Sophomore hurler Tomas Michelson will take the mound on Friday for the Flames as freshman Jack Andersen and senior Joey Begel are in line to start for Saturday’s doubleheader.  Michelson was recently selected as the National Primetime Pitcher of the Week by for his performance against Texas A&M last Friday.  He was also selected as the Horizon League and College Sports Madness Pitcher of the Week.
