INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – UIC sophomore pitcher Tomas Michelson has been named the Horizon League’s Pitcher of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.  Michelson piloted the Flames to a 2-0 upset victory at #24 Texas A&M this past Friday to kick off the 2013 season.  The win was UIC’s first triumph over a nationally-ranked opponent since March 7, 2010 (#23 Western Kentucky) and the program’s first season-opening victory in 11 years.

“Tomas went out there and did what he was capable of doing,” said head coach Mike Dee.  “It wasn’t surprising to us because we know how talented he is.”

Making just his third career start, Michelson threw 7.1 scoreless innings and allowed a mere four hits, while fanning five Aggie batters.  Five strikeouts serves as a new career-high for the right-hander as does 7.1 innings pitched.  Michelson also held A&M to a batting average of .160 and picked up just his second career win.

Texas A&M appeared in the College World Series in 2011 and concluded the 2012 campaign ranked 16th in the final edition of the NCAA’s RPI.

The Flames return to the diamond on Friday, Feb. 22 for a three-game series at Santa Clara with a double-header scheduled for Saturday.
