INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – UIC baseball touts three players on the All-Horizon League Preseason Team as the conference office announced the squad and team rankings on Wednesday afternoon. First baseman Alex Grunenwald, designated hitter Ryan Boss and outfielder Jon Ryan were selected by the league coaches, giving UIC the second-most representatives in the conference behind defending league champion Valparaiso with five.
Grunenwald returns for his final season with the Flames after posting a team-best .345 batting average in 2012, which ranked fourth in the Horizon League. Grunenwald picked up second-team All-League at the conclusion of last season and was voted to the All-Newcomer Team. Prior to UIC, Grunenwald competed two seasons for Chandler Gilbert Community College in Chandler, Ariz.
Boss paced the Flames and ranked fourth in the league with seven home runs last season and totaled a slugging percentage of .482. The power hitter played and 40 games and started 35, totaling 38 hits, 67 total bases, 21 runs and 18 RBI.
“We’re expecting really good things from those two this year,” said head coach Mike Dee. “I think they’ve grown as players since last year and I think they will be even more consistent.
Ryan played and started in all 57 games for UIC last season, serving as the lone Flame to do so. He ranked first on the team in runs scored (37), RBI (40) and doubles (13) and second in slugging percentage (.465) on-base percentage (.384) and homers (6). Ryan hit .384 during the 2012 Horizon League Tournament and ended his season on an eight-game hitting streak.
“Jon is just now returning from a back injury that kept him out all summer,” said Dee. “If he can’t suit up his experience will be sorely missed.”
The Horizon League also announced preseason team rankings in which UIC was tabbed fourth of the five conference programs.
