Indianapolis, Ind. -UW-Milwaukee's 2-thru-4 hitters batted a combined 9-for-12 (.750) with five RBI and five runs scored, as the No. 3 seeded Panthers staved off elimination and earned the 8-4 victory over No. 1 University of Illinois at Chicago, snapping the Flames' eight-game winning streak, in the Horizon League Baseball Championship Round at Victory Field on Saturday afternoon.
UWM junior outfielder Joe Nowicki led the charge for the Panthers, going 3-for-5 with five RBI and a run scored, including a three-run homer, while teammates Brooks Graff (3 runs) and Zak Rivera (run) each collected three hits on the afternoon.
Panthers' second baseman Jesse Hart was solid at the plate as well, going 2-for-5 with a solo homer in the second inning and two runs scored.
With the victory, UWM (26-30) forces a second championship contest against the Flames (37-19-1), scheduled for 11:00 a.m. (CST) on Sunday morning for the right to represent the Horizon League in the 2005 NCAA Baseball Regionals.
UWM starter Robert Michaelkiewicz (4-5) picked up the victory for the Panthers, scattering four runs (2 earned) and eight hits in 8.1 innings of work. Panthers' reliever Rob Brockel retired the final two batters to earn his third save of the season.
UIC starter Scott Saling (4-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing four hits and four runs in two innings pitched, while striking out two batters.
UIC seniors Mike Bruszer (run) and Shane Crowder each paced the Flames at the dish, with two hits apiece. Sophomore center fielder Larry Gempp Jr. (run) and senior third baseman Bryan Russo each added an RBI for the Flames in defeat.
