Dayton, Ohio - Revenge is sweet, victory is sweeter.

Senior designated hitter Chuck Peters and junior first baseman Brad Ryan each connected for home runs off UW-Milwaukee pitcher and Horizon League Pitcher of the Year, Mikel Schaefer, to help lead the Flames to the 6-4 victory over the Panthers in the second round of the Horizon League Baseball Tournament at Nischwitz Stadium, hosted by Wright State, on Friday afternoon.

With the victory, UIC (37-16) eliminates UW-Milwaukee - the team that defeated the Flames in the 2002 Horizon League Championship - and moves on to the next round against #2 Butler at 9:30 a.m. (CST) on Saturday morning.

UIC sophomore left-hander Ryan Gehring picked up the complete-game victory for the Flames as the Burlington, Wis., native scattered 12 hits while striking out five batters to improve his record to 8-4 on the campaign. Schaefer took the complete-game loss for the Panthers, allowing six runs - five earned - and eight hits to drop to 7-2 on the season.

UWM got on the board in the top of the second inning as right fielder Dave Pudlosky and first baseman P.J. Cannon each roped one-out singles. Jeff Pitrof plated Pudlosky with a RBI single to left field, putting the Panthers ahead, 1-0.

UIC answered the bell in the bottom half of the frame as junior outfielder J.P. Moran grounded a single through the right side to open the inning. Junior shortstop Jordan DeVoir plated Moran with a RBI double to left-center, evening the score at 1-apiece.

Defensive miscues plagued both teams in the third inning as both tallied an unearned run to keep the score knotted at two.

In the top of the third, UWM center fielder Marcellus Dawson singled, stole a base and advanced to third on a groundout by shortstop Steve Sanfilippo. UWM third baseman Ben Stanczyk sent a ground ball that UIC third baseman Nelson Gord was unable to handle, allowing Dawson to score, putting the Panthers' ahead, 2-1.

With one out in the bottom of the third inning, junior left fielder Mike Hughes (2-for-4, 2 runs) sent a hot shot to Stanczyk at third base. Stanczyk got in front of it and sent his throw past Cannon at first base, allowing Hughes to move over to third base.

Junior outfielder J.P. Carey drove in Hughes from third with a RBI groundout to second base, tying the game at two.

UIC tagged Schaefer for two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the 4-2 lead. Junior first baseman Brad Ryan blasted a one-out solo homer - his seventh of the season - to give the Flames the 3-2 advantage. DeVoir drew a base on balls, moved to third on a single by catcher Kevin Nelson and scored on a wild pitch by Schaefer, to extend UIC's advantage to 4-2.

UWM (25-25) used a little two-out magic in the top of the fifth as second baseman Troy Doering and Sanfilippo each connected for singles with two outs. Stanczyk roped a two-run double to even things up at 4-apiece.

The Flames quickly answered in the bottom half of the fifth as senior designated hitter Chuck Peters connected for a two-run homer - his team-leading 11th of the season - to give UIC the 6-4 lead and the victory.
