With the victory, UIC improves to 35-16 overall and 15-6 in Horizon League action, while the Panthers drop to 25-23 on the campaign and 13-10 in league play.
Sophomore pitcher Charlie Hahn tossed 1.1 innings of hitless relief to pick up his third victory of the season, while sophomore left-hander David Haehnel allowed one run in two innings to pick up his Horizon League leading ninth save of the season. UWM starter Aaron Bushong (2-9) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs and 11 hits in 6.1 innings.
UIC got on the board in the first inning as junior outfielder J.P. Carey roped a one-out single and stole second base. Carey moved over to third on an infield single by Moran. Ryan stepped to the plate and connected for an opposite-field RBI single to give the Flames the 1-0 advantage.
The Panthers evened things up in the top of the third as third baseman Ben Stanczyk plated shortstop Steve Sanfilippo from third base with a RBI double to knot the game at 1-apiece.
UWM used some stellar defense in the bottom of the third inning as UWM left fielder Sam Jansen robbed Ryan of a three-run homer, scaling the wall to come up with a spectacular catch, ending the frame.
The Flames countered with some defense of their own as Carey threw out designated hitter David Michna at the plate on a single by Jansen to keep the score tied at one in the top of the sixth inning.
UIC took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Ryan led off the inning with a single and moved over to second base on a sacrifice bunt by senior catcher Kevin Nelson. The Flames added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Hughes opened the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Carey.
Moran plated Hughes with his third single of the afternoon extending UIC's advantage to 3-1. Moran advanced to second on UWM centerfielder Troy Doering's throw to the plate and scored on a RBI single by Ryan to put the game out of reach for the Panthers.
UWM catcher Jeff Pitrof added a two-out solo homer in the top of the ninth, but that was all the Panthers could muster.
UIC will travel to Dayton, Ohio on Thursday afternoon and will play the winner of the Wright State/Cleveland State play-in game in the opening round of the Horizon League Baseball Tournament.
