May 17, 2002
Milwaukee, Wis. - The University of Illinois at Chicago scored seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to earn the 11-6 come-from-behind Horizon League victory over UW-Milwaukee at Henry Aaron Field on Friday night.
With the victory, UIC improves to 34-13 on the season and 12-4 in Horizon League play, while UW-Milwaukee falls to 31-16 overall and 14-6 in league action.
The 34 victories marks a UIC school-record as the previous record of 33 was set three times in 1989, 1990 and 2000.
Junior Curtis Granderson (Lynwood, Ill./T.F. South) led the offensive attack for UIC as he went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Senior John Rosner extended his hitting-streak to 28 games as he went 3-for-6 with a RBI and a run.
Sophomore Mike Bruszer (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) also turned in an impressive performance as he went 3-for-6 with two RBI on the night.
Freshman southpaw David Haehnel (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) picked up the victory in relief as he pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and striking out four batters to improve his record to 2-0 on the season.l
UW-Milwaukee took a 6-3 lead heading into the top of the eighth inning as Rosner (single) and Granderson (double) opened up the inning with hits off Panthers' reliever Matt Friesleben (2-6) to put runners at second and third for UIC.
Sophomore first baseman Mike Lorenzo (Lockport, Ill./Providence) cut the Panthers' lead to 6-5 as he roped a two-run double, his second of the night.
Junior designated hitter Chuck Peters (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) then plated Lorenzo with a RBI triple, the first of his career, down the right field line to tie the game up at 6-apiece.
Junior catcher Kevin Nelson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) then drove home the winning run as he knocked in Peters from third base with a RBI single to put the Flames ahead, 7-6.
UIC then received insurance runs as sophomore third baseman Nelson Gord (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove), Bruszer and Rosner each recorded RBI to put the game out of reach for UW-Milwaukee.
UIC got out to a 2-0 lead after 1 ½ innings as sophomore left fielder Mike Hughes (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd) and Bruszer each recorded RBI for the Flames.
UW-Milwaukee, however, knotted the game up at 2-apiece in the bottom half of the second as Panthers' designated hitter Jeff Pitrof connected for a two-run homer off Flames' starter Ryan Gehring (Burlington, Wis./Central Catholic). The Panthers' would go on to touch Gehring for four more runs before UIC could start their rally.
Both teams will go at it again on Saturday afternoon for a Horizon League doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 1:00 P.M.
