Baseball Thrashes Cleveland State, 14-1

East Cleveland, Ohio - The University of Illinois at Chicago baseball squad exploded for 12 runs over the final three innings, highlighted by a pair of two-run doubles from junior left fielder Bart Babineaux, as the visiting Flames rolled to the 14-1 Horizon League victory over Cleveland State at Forest Hill Park on Friday afternoon.
Babineaux went 2-for-4 on the afternoon, with four RBI and three runs scored to pace the Flames' offensive attack. UIC also received solid performances at the plate from senior right fielder Shane Crowder (2-for-4, 2 runs, solo homer) and senior shortstop Jeff Gremley (2-for-4, RBI, run).
With his single in the ninth inning, senior third baseman Bryan Russo has now reached base in 36 straight games.
With the victory, UIC improves to 26-17-1 on the season and 7-6 in Horizon League action, while the host Vikings drop to 9-28 overall and 2-11 in conference play.
Flames' starter Zach Peterson (8-1) earned his seventh straight decision, scattering eight hits in eight innings, while fanning three batters. Cleveland State hurler Matt Kaltenbach was tagged with the loss, surrendering five runs and six hits in seven innings of work.
Cleveland State designated hitter Gary Ball led the Vikings offensively, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
UIC and Cleveland State will be back in action on Saturday, with an afternoon twinbill, beginning at 12:00 p.m. (CST).
