May 6, 2003
Chicago, Ill. - The University of Illinois at Chicago baseball team found out that they would play Lakeland College as recently as Monday night.
Their lack of preparation for the Muskies, however, did not hinder UIC as the Flames picked up the 17-2 non-conference victory at Les Miller Field on Tuesday evening.
With the victory, UIC improves to 31-14 overall, while Lakeland drops to 23-14 on the season.
Senior designated hitter Chuck Peters led the way for UIC offensively, as the Orland Park, Ill., native went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. The Flames also picked up impressive performances from juniors Jordan DeVoir (3-for-6, two RBI, two runs) and Nelson Gord (2-for-5, 3 RBI, 2 runs).
Junior Marcus Goodman improves to 2-0 on the season as he allowed five hits and struck out three batters in his first career start. Lakeland hurler Steve Plucinski took the loss for the Muskies, giving up five runs and six hits in two innings of work to drop to 3-4 on the campaign.
UIC jumped all over Lakeland starter Steve Plucinski in the bottom of the first inning as they tallied four runs off the Mundelein, Ill., native. Right fielder Mike Hughes drew a walk from Plucinski to open the frame and advanced to third on a bunt single by left fielder J.P. Carey.
Peters plated Hughes with a RBI single, moving Carey to second base. Junior center fielder J.P. Moran drove in Carey with a RBI double to left center, giving UIC the 2-0 advantage. The Flames extended their lead to 4-0 as DeVoir cleared the bases with a two-run triple.
UIC added another run in the bottom of the second inning as Gord reached base on a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Lakeland third baseman Jon Aerts. Gord moved to third on a fly ball by Hughes and scored on a RBI single from Peters.
The Flames tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Peters roped his third-consecutive RBI single and scored on junior first baseman Brad Ryan's sixth homer of the season to push UIC ahead, 8-0.
UIC's offensive onslaught continued in the bottom of the fifth inning, as the Flames loaded the bases for Gord. Gord promptly cleared the bases with a three-run double, extending the Flames' lead to 11-0. Gord moved to third on ground ball by Hughes and scored on a wild pitch by Lakeland reliever Dan Rauwerdink, extending UIC's lead to 12-0.
UIC will be back in action on Friday afternoon, as they will travel to Michigan to square off with Detroit for a Horizon League contest, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
