Worthington Complete In Baseball's 8-3 Win Over Wright State|
May 1, 2009
CHICAGO- Adam Worthington struck out six in his second complete game of the season, and the UIC baseball team broke open an early deadlock by scoring five runs in the third and fourth innings to pick up an 8-3 victory over Wright State at Les Miller Field on Friday night.
Brett Schaefer was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer for the Flames (19-19, 12-4 Horizon League), who won their third consecutive game.
Worthington gave up all three of the runs the Raiders (22-23, 9-8 Horizon League) scored during the first three innings, but the senior right-hander did not allow Wright State to cross the plate the rest of the evening. He scattered five hits in the final six frames to go the distance for the second time in 2009.
UIC scored three times in the first after Brandon Harwell led off the game with a homer and Jason Ganek and Chris Rutta drove in runs. But Wright State posted a run in the second and tallied two in the third to even the game in its early stages.
The Flames did not wait to respond. Schaefer, Ganek and Rutta all reached to begin the bottom of the third and put Raider starter Michael Woytek in a bases-loaded jam. Andy Leonard hit a grounder that was converted into a 6-4-3 double play but allowed Schaefer to score the go-ahead run, and Tony Altavilla ripped a Woytek offering deep to right center for a run-scoring triple.
Harwell led off the fourth with a double, and three batters later Schaefer drove a 1-1 pitch from reliever Travis Lamar over the fence for his third blast of the season.
The early offensive fireworks by both teams subsided, but UIC scored all it needed to win as Worthington quashed every attempt of a Raider rally.
Members of the 1958 UIC baseball team were saluted in a special on-field ceremony prior to the game. Bill Bonk, Larry Bergnach, Bill Clifford, Bob Getts, John Hornacek and Ron Klein, six members of the 1958 Navy Pier-based squad, were in attendance as the Flames honored one of the winningest teams in its baseball history.
UIC and Wright State conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader at Les Miller Field this Saturday, May 2 beginning at noon.
