April 25, 2003
Chicago, Ill. - The University of Illinois at Chicago baseball team jumped all over IPFW starting pitcher Aaron Van Allen in the bottom of the first inning as the Flames went yard three times in the opening frame en route to the 7-0 non-conference victory at Les Miller Field on Friday evening.
The Flames also received a stellar pitching performance from sophomore left hander Ryan Gehring as he earned the victory, allowing three hits and striking out six batters in eight innings of work to improve his record to 5-3 on the season.
With the victory, UIC improves to 23-13 overall and extends its home-winning streak to 20 games at Les Miller Field. IPFW falls to 16-26-1 on the campaign.
Van Allen took the loss for the Mastodons, dropping to 0-1 on the season.
UIC took early control of the game as junior right fielder Mike Hughes connected for an opposite-field homer to put the Flames ahead 1-0. Junior left fielder J.P. Moran reached base on a single and scored on a mammoth homer by senior designated hitter Chuck Peters, his seventh of the season, to give UIC the 3-0 advantage.
Junior first baseman Brad Ryan then capped off the scoring for the Flames as he roped his fourth homer of the season to extend UIC's lead to 4-0. Ryan added another RBI in the bottom of the fourth inning with a RBI groundout to push the Flames ahead, 5-0.
UIC tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth inning as junior third baseman Nelson Gord recorded a RBI groundout to give the Flames the 6-0 lead. The Flames scored again in the bottom of the seventh as Mastodons' reliever Keegan Laycock hit senior catcher Kevin Nelson with a pitch.
Nelson moved over a base on a Laycock wild pitch and scored from second base on another errant offering from Laycock to give UIC the final score of 7-0.
Both teams will be back in action on Saturday for a twinbill, beginning at 1:05 p.m. (CST) at Les Miller Field.
